Acne Scars: Skin Memories That Can Be Fixed

When acne heals, the feeling of relief is often replaced by a new worry: the scars. Many people, especially teenagers, experience this. These marks are just remnants of inflammation on the skin, but their impact can go all the way to one's feelings.

Why Do Scars Appear?

Scars appear because inflamed acne (especially cystic or deep acne) damages the skin tissue. When the body tries to heal it, the production of collagen (the protein that supports the skin) can become erratic. If there is a lack of collagen, the skin becomes indented. If there is too much, it becomes raised. The habit of squeezing pimples makes the inflammation worse and makes scars more likely to form.

Various Types of Scars

Acne scars come in different forms:

1. Indented Scars (Most Common): Some are deep and narrow (ice pick), wide with sharp edges (boxcar), or wide depressions that make the skin wavy (rolling).

2. Raised Scars: These become lumps of scar tissue, often appearing on the back or chest.

3. Dark/Red Spots (Hyperpigmentation): These are actually not permanent scars but temporary marks that can gradually fade on their own, especially with the use of sunscreen.

Their Impact on Mental Health and Confidence

Facial scars make many people feel less confident, embarrassed, and anxious in social interactions. Research in the Journal of Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology (2023) states that acne scars often make people feel hopeless because they are considered permanent. Our worry about these scars actually has a greater psychological impact than other people's judgments of our scars.

How to Treat Them, According to Their Type

Fortunately, acne scars can be improved:

1. For Spots & Mild Texture: Use products with Vitamin C, Niacinamide, Retinoids, or AHAs. The key is consistency and patience. Don't forget sunscreen SPF 30+ every day, because sunlight makes spots darker.

2. For Deep Indented/Raised Scars: Requires the help of a dermatologist. There are several options, such as chemical peels, microneedling, laser, or filler injections. These treatments can be done once the active acne has cleared.

Important to Remember

The most important thing is to prevent it by avoiding squeezing pimples and treating active acne thoroughly. If scars have already appeared, consider them part of the process. Seek help from a dermatologist for the right treatment. Remember, acne scars on your skin are not a reflection of who you truly are.
