A Bittersweet Portrait Behind the Smile: A Touching Journey That Tugs at the Heartstrings of Humanity

Medan City, North Sumatra - (11/22/25) An unexpected encounter in a busy city corner took place between Jestham and two young children, Kevin and Nanda. This simple interaction quickly unveiled a life far from what childhood should be. Instead of being filled with laughter, toys, and a zeal for learning, their days are colored by the struggle to secure a mere morsel of food. Jestham’s opening question, “What are you doing right now?” was answered with innocent honesty, “Begging,” marking the beginning of a heart-wrenching, poignant tale.

Digging deeper, the harsh reality does not stop at hunger. Their right to an education has long been stripped away. Kevin admits he no longer attends school due to his family’s economic condition. They walk from one place to another, living without a permanent home, and even often sleep on the streets. The warmth and protection of a family, which should be their foundation, is instead a luxury they can only dream of.

Kevin’s life narrative grows even more somber as he shares about his fractured family. Since birth, he has never experienced the wholeness of his parents' household. He even expresses sadness at not being able to feel the happiness that other children do. His answer when asked what he misses most, “Never get tired of teaching a child like me,” is a heartfelt plea, full of longing for parental guidance and affection.

The portrait of a disharmonious family is also evident from Nanda’s account. She feels often blamed and becomes the target of her mother’s anger, even when conflicts arise with her older sibling. Although on the other hand, she recalls her father as being more neutral and often separating them when they fought, the scars from unfair treatment remain. This shows the heavy emotional burden they must bear at such a young age.

Yet, amidst this sorrowful story, there is help. Jestham chose to take action. She bought food and basic necessities for Kevin and Nanda. Their faces then lit up with joy and relief. When they said "full," it was clear that even the most basic needs are something incredibly precious to them.

Through Jestham's journey, this is not merely a story we read, but an important reminder to always be grateful. We often complain about small things, while having access to food, school, and a complete family. For some people, these things are immense blessings.

In closing, the message to remain patient and maintain family harmony is worth reflecting upon. The story from Kevin and Nanda teaches us that every child deserves a good childhood. Sometimes, genuine attention and assistance from us can mean the world to them, even if just for a moment. Let us take this story as an invitation to be more empathetic, to appreciate every kindness we receive more deeply, and to be more sincere in our gratitude.
