The Tears of a Tissue Seller: The Greatest Blessing from One Packet That Changed a Day

Medan Sunggal, Medan City—(16/06/25 ) In the hustle and bustle of daily life, we are sometimes reminded of the true meaning of struggle through unexpected encounters. Such is the story of Jestham, who one day met an elderly tissue seller on the side of the road. With one leg no longer whole and relying only on a cane, the man remained enthusiastic, offering his tissues to passing motorists. Behind his smile, however, lay a heartbreaking story of survival amid hardship.

A warm conversation unfolded between Jestham and the man. It turned out that he sold tissues to support his six daughters. "Business is slow today, Miss. I’ve only sold four packets so far," he said with a weary yet hopeful expression. There were even days when he only managed to sell two packets after an entire day of work. His struggle was made even more difficult because he had to take public transportation daily from Belawan to his selling spot, despite his physical limitations.

The man’s story grew even more touching when he shared the accident that changed his life. "This was because of a hit-and-run in Belawan," he said, pointing to his leg. For three months, he couldn’t work at all. What was even more moving was that, despite the perpetrator fleeing and never being found, the man chose to forgive. "Let it be; that’s between them and the Almighty," he said with a sincerity rarely seen.

Witnessing his struggle, Jestham couldn’t stand by. She bought a single packet of tissues at a price far higher than usual as a gesture of support. Tears welled up in the man’s eyes as he said, "This is the greatest blessing I’ve ever received." To him, the money wasn’t just about the amount—it was a sign that there were still people who cared about his struggle.

This tissue seller is a true embodiment of a father’s resilience. He once resorted to begging to survive but chose to sell tissues because he didn’t want his children to grow up in shame. "Rather than begging, it’s better to work hard," he said firmly. Though his income was uncertain, he remained grateful and never stopped praying for sustenance.

Jestham then encouraged everyone to help. "If you pass by Simpang Klambir, don’t hesitate to buy his tissues," she urged. Every bit of money given doesn’t just help meet his daily needs—it also gives him the strength to keep fighting. In his prayers, he even asks for blessings for those who help him, including the hit-and-run driver who once hurt him.

This story teaches us about sincerity, hard work, and the power of prayer. Behind the struggles of people like this tissue seller lies a valuable lesson: happiness and sustenance can come in unexpected ways. Let us open our hearts to help others, for even the smallest act of kindness can mean the world to those in need.

May this story inspire us all to be more compassionate toward those around us and to always be grateful for the blessings we have.
