A Scavenger Mother and Honesty: Between Reality and Prejudice

A Scavenger Mother and Honesty: Between Reality and Prejudice
Medan Tembung, Medan City—(March 31, 2025) During her busy schedule of distributing groceries to those in need, Jestham came across a mother who was facing financial difficulties. The woman carried a pile of used goods on her shoulders, her face weary yet filled with determination. Without hesitation, Jestham approached her and offered help. More than just providing groceries, that meeting became a heartfelt moment—a reminder of a mother’s selfless love and sacrifices for her family.

When asked where she was from, the mother replied that she came from Pasar Menteng, working as a scavenger. Jestham gave her rice, cooking oil, and other basic necessities, hoping the small assistance could ease the family’s burden. Upon being asked about her children, the mother shared that she had five—two daughters and three sons—but only two were still able to attend school.
Her daily struggles were truly moving. Every day, she walked around collecting used items, sometimes earning only around Rp300,000 per week. "It’s exhausting, but for my children, I have to stay strong," she said, her eyes glistening with tears. Her husband also worked as a goods-cart driver, but his income was unstable. Life was a constant struggle—they had even recently moved houses due to financial difficulties.
Her hope was simple: she wanted her children to have a better future and live successful lives. Jestham encouraged her with uplifting words, reminding her to trust in God’s plan. "God has a beautiful plan for you. "Seek first the Kingdom of God, and everything else will follow," she said, offering a prayer.
Hearing the mother’s story, Jestham couldn’t hold back her emotions. She gave her some extra money as support, hoping it would be a blessing for the family. "A mother’s perseverance is extraordinary. What seems impossible becomes possible for her children," she remarked.
Before parting, Jestham urged the mother to stay strong and lean on God. "Believe me, no struggle is in vain. God is good, and He will surely bless you and your family," she said with conviction. The mother tearfully expressed her gratitude, comforted by the kindness she had received.
The mother’s spirit and sacrifices are a true testament to selfless love. Let us always be grateful, care for one another, and believe that every good deed we sow will return as a blessing. May the weight of her burdens be lifted and replaced with abundant prosperity.
