Behind Sweat and Cardboard: A Father Who Keeps Paradise in His Prayers

Medan Sunggal, Medan City – (04/23/25) While continuing her mission of kindness, Jestham unexpectedly encountered a scavenger in front of a minimarket. The man’s weary yet sincere face immediately caught her attention. Without hesitation, she invited him inside to choose as many daily essentials as he needed. At first, the man—49-year-old Bapak Monang—hesitated, explaining he had no money. But Jestham reassured him: "This is God’s blessing—no payment needed."

Left by his wife, who moved to another city, Bapak Monang now raises his only daughter, Gebi (a 4th grader), alone. Despite abandonment and poverty, he clings to three principles: never steal, never lie, and avoid drugs.

With just two minutes granted by Jestham, Bapak Monang deftly gathered rice, cooking oil, instant noodles, and other staples. His calloused hands moved thoughtfully—each grain of rice mattered for his family. When offered food, it was revealed he’d only eaten a plate of boiled noodles all day. As a single father, he prioritizes Gebi’s meals and education over his own hunger. "What matters is my child eats and attends school," he said firmly.

His life is a relentless struggle. After his wife left, he became a scavenger, collecting recyclables with unpredictable earnings. Yet amid hardship, he remains grateful to work honestly and watch Gebi grow.

Touched by his resilience, Jestham gave more than groceries—she handed cash for Gebi’s school fees. Tears streamed down Bapak Monang’s sun-worn cheeks.

Jestham realized: Behind weathered faces often lie extraordinary strength and love. For Bapak Monang, he returned home lighter—carrying not just supplies, but renewed hope for his daughter’s future.

This story teaches us about a father’s dignity. Though abandoned and poor, he safeguards his child’s tomorrow. May Jestham’s kindness spark change for this family and inspire us all to care for one another.
